How to clean wooden floors

There is no denying that wooden floors can transform a room with their warm cosy appearance mixed with timeless charm. Wooden floors do however require TLC to ensure their appearance, integrity and lifespan are not compromised due to neglect.

Step-by-step guide for cleaning wooden floors.

Regular maintenance should include.

  1. Sweeping or vacuum - Use a soft-bristled broom or vacuum cleaner with a floor brush attachment to remove dust, dirt and debris. This will help prevent scratches from being caused by particles on the floor.
  2. Damp mopping - Use a slightly dampened mop or microfiber cloth to clean the floor. Ensure the mop is not dripping wet, as excess water can damage wood. Make sure to wring out excess moisture thoroughly.

Deep cleaning as needed.

Choose the right cleaning agent:

  1. Commercial Wood Floor Cleaner: Purchase a cleaner specifically designed for wooden floors. Ensure it's compatible with the floor finish.
  2. Homemade Solution: Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with warm water. Test a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't damage the floor.

Mop the floor:

  1. Dip the mop or cloth into the cleaning solution and wring out excess liquid until it's barely damp.
  2. Start mopping from one end of the room, moving towards the other end. Avoid leaving excess liquid on the floor.

Dry the floor:

  1. After mopping, use a dry, clean cloth or towel to dry the floor. This step is crucial as excess moisture can damage the wood.

What to avoid

It is best practice to refer to the manufacturer's guidelines or recommendations for cleaning your specific type of wood flooring. If you are unsure about a cleaning method or product, it's best to test it in a small inconspicuous area first. With the right care and gentle cleaning, you will help maintain the beauty and longevity of your wooden floors.

  • Harsh chemicals: avoid using harsh cleaners, ammonia or vinegar on wood floors as they can damage the finish
  • Steam cleaners: Excess heat and moisture from steam cleaners can harm wood floors
  • Abrasive tools: Stay away from abrasive scrubbers or steel wool as they can scratch the surface of the wood.

Additional tips

  • Avoid Excess Water: Water can warp or damage wood. Always ensure your mop or cloth is just slightly damp, not soaking wet.
  • Spot Clean Spills Immediately: Wipe up spills promptly using a soft cloth to prevent damage to the wood.
  • Protective Pads: Place felt or protective pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches when moving furniture.
  • Regular Maintenance is Key: Regularly clean your wooden floors to prevent the buildup of dirt and grime that can be harder to remove later.
