Difference between vinyl and hybrid vinyl flooring

Core layer

The core layer is where they differ.

In Vinyl flooring - the core is made of PVC. In hybrid vinyl flooring, PVC is mixed with recycled wood or limestone. It makes hybrid floors rigid and stable compared to vinyl floors.

Both flooring options are scratch-resistant and can handle heavy foot traffic. However, hybrid vinyl has a clear edge. The rigid core layer makes it highly durable and can withstand wear and tear, dents and scratches. Especially if you have pets or children, hybrid vinyl is a great option.

Installation

Vinyl floors can be installed in two ways :

  • Loose lay - the edge of the planks is fastened down to the subfloor. No adhesives are required. The planks need to be cut in size and put in place to complete the installation
  • Glue down - the planks are glued to the subfloor using adhesives

Hybrid vinyl has a click-lock mechanism. The planks need to be laid row by row and they will click together without the requirement of adhesives.

Cost

Vinyl planks are slightly cheaper than hybrid vinyl planks. The technology used to make the core thicker makes the hybrid vinyl more expensive than vinyl.

However, both are still cost-effective options for homeowners looking to upgrade their flooring. Ensure you check the product before you buy - check for the manufacturer’s warranty and reviews.

Comfort

Both floors have an acoustic underlay (foam padding) made of foam, rubber or cork. The underlay is placed underneath the floor to block the sound.

The underlay also makes the layer more comfortable to walk on. The thick core layer of hybrid vinyl improves the acoustics and comfort level

That means hybrid floors are much more comfortable to walk on compared to vinyl floors.

Maintenance

Both flooring options are low-maintenance.

They are easy to clean - simply sweep, mop or vacuum the floor. Plus they don’t trap dust so they are a good option for people with asthma or allergies.

Designs

Hybrid vinyl and vinyl flooring are available in a range of styles and colours. You are sure to find a style that suits your personal taste.

Which is better - Hybrid or Vinyl Flooring?

Both materials are constructed similarly.

The only difference is the core layer. Limestone and wood mixed with PVC make the hybrid vinyl stronger and more comfortable.

Essentially, Hybrid vinyl is an improved version of vinyl flooring. Both are 100% waterproof, durable, hard-wearing and stylish.
