Have you been considering wood or laminate flooring for your home, but are curious about composite wood flooring as an alternative? It's become a popular preference but, what exactly is composite flooring???
Composite wood flooring is also known as luxury vinyl flooring (LVT) or, as we call it, vinyl flooring planks and it combines the elegance of hardwood with a stronger foundation, making it an attractive and durable choice for homeowners as it’s waterproof!
Its unique construction includes a strong high density fiberboard, or plywood, inner layer that provides support to its stylish outer veneer and typically thin slices of real hardwood coated in glossy protective finish. This balanced mix of beauty and practicality in luxury vinyl flooring also provides ultimate durability and longevity in even the busiest homes.
As previously mentioned, composite flooring is waterproof, whilst keeping the beautiful appearance of hardwood floors, giving composite the leading edge in modern flooring options. The waterproof attributes of composite flooring mean that it is perfect for wet rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens, as well as outside and poolside installations.
Composite flooring is more expensive than a laminate alternative; however, for good reason, namely that laminate is only water resistant as opposed to fully waterproof. Water and moisture can cause laminate floors to swell and warp which makes it unsuitable for wet areas and this is where composite flooring excels in performance equating to a more versatile option.
When it comes to environmental factors, composite flooring is considered a “green” option as it is environmentally friendly. Namely because all the cutoffs from solid planks are used in the manufacturing process of composite flooring so much more of the tree is utilised, reducing waste. Also, taking advantage of fast growing trees means that older, well established forests are not exploited.
On a side note: laminates are regularly made with plastics and potentially toxic chemicals and vinyl floors are primarily made from PVC, which is the world’s 2rd most widely produced plastic.
Composite wood flooring offers a happy medium between hardwood and laminate. The waterproof durability of composite flooring makes it a clear winner versus laminate. Its crisscrossed layers of plywood make for superior durability compared to traditional single layer hardwoods, while avoiding the potential issues that can come with installing regular wood in your home such as cracking or splitting caused by moisture expansion. Plus, it's prefinished so you don't need to worry about applying any staining during installation.
